IDEO- are they really this amazing?
I’ve been watching and sifting through IDEO case studies for a couple of years. I keep coming back to them and I wonder, what is it that makes the process work////
what is it?
it makes me ponder even more because I saw Owen Rogers speak twice at Do Lectures, fantastic stuff and I started to remember again what it is about IDEO….
its about re imagining experiences where people are scared or angry, things like the emergency department experience, put your in their shoes and really see what they see
what are the insights- Owen gave a great example that people hated paying late fees but they were willing to spend a similar amount of money each month getting access to movies via NETFLIX
so what does your target market hate? and may be willing to pay for a good or service that removes the pain
Owen ….

Reconnecting, relearning and reinventing
I went off to blog on tumblr for a while, it didn’t work out, so now I’m back to relearn and reinvent myself. Where am I now? I’ll ponder this and get back to you, it’s a really big question.
Waste – grunge or gold?
Hmm…there seems to be a lot of waste around
Imagine a bike shop, they have boxs, packaging, bits of broken bikes, punctured tubes. That s lot of stuff every week that needs to be put into recycling or waste bins that business owners pay to be emptied. That is a cost! Is there anything in there that has value? can it be reused?
Lets start with the inner tubes
How about creating business cards from used inner tubes?
What about using tubes as phone covers
Beautiful skinny tubes can be cut into beautiful necklaces and jewellry
Hmm…..
….is this the business walking the talk, using some waste, creating another product or service?
So what is the value that an artist could provide to a bike shop?
….product diverisfication
….reusing waste
….another way of looking
Looking for connections to Downhiller’s
I’m wanting used downhill bike tubes, specifically 26×2.5×2.7, they’re wider and thicker than normal, I want to reuse them, any ideas?
Starting up- do you have a the courage to ask?
Starting up- do you have a the courage to ask?
Wow, the power of feedback!
This is crunch time when you think you have created something that may be a goer. Next step is to talk to people, yep and you’ll generally get two responses. It’s Great or crap.
So, can you put the ego aside and listen, really listen! The fact someone is taking the time to tell you this is valuable They could be doing anything and they’re choosing to give you raw, authentic feedback. Thanks Sam, Andrew and Keith, really valuable insights.
Design
Does it work?
What’s the value? Is it cool, a fad, green?
Is there a match between all those attributes that make an iphone desirable and an iTubecover? Things like- simplicity, great design and beauty.
Is the contrast between high tech and low tech relevant- is that funky, cool , valuable in some way?
As Sam said, go and have a conversation with iphone users in social places. Make it short and get video of them talking about it.
Dani said observe and ask a few questions about how people are currently using their iPhone to get some insights.
Feedback
The contrast is stark. I’ve heard, I wouldn’t use it if you paid and wow I love it, where do I get one?
IPhone users
There is huge diversity in the IPhone community, apple has built a brand over 20 years that is now culminating in massive success, largely made up of tech solutions, great design, beauty, and function. This is no over night success! The interesting thing will be if there is a sustainaed long term increase in the the apple community numbers with the ‘mainstreaming’ of apple products.
You no longer need to be a ‘creative’ person to own an apple product.
Why cover it up?
Yeah, there really is status tied up in the latest must have device that demonstrates your style, taste, love of convergent technology, hipness, and non and on the list goes…
There are also those who want to cover it up, maybe that is about protection, subtlty,
What is that? …. a conversation starter
An iPhone inside iTubecover creates questioning, what is that?
Do you have a cover on your iphone? why do you have one and does it meet your needs?
I’d love to hear from you!
Unused garments donated to help people return to work looking the part
In Australia, recovery of post-consumer waste is mainly carried out by charitable organisations that either sell the donated goods through their charity stores, export the clothing, or sell damaged cotton and silk cloth to rag merchants for use in industry. The Australian National Association of Charitable Recycling Organisation (NACRO) has estimated that 50m kilograms of textile waste is collected annually by Australian clothing recyclers through charity bins and donations, of which 12.5m kilograms are unsuitable for reclamation and sent to landfill (Caulfield 2009).

Social enterprise opportunity
Requesting donations of unused garments and accessories for 1. people returning to work, 2. going to court, or 3. unemployed people going for interviews
A bit like the business that collects food and redistributes to homeless and disadvantaged.
make clothes hangers for whole industry from waste fabric
hangers are a disposable waste productfabric is a waste
bring the two together to create-
solution
- glue/sew/press/bind layers of used fabrics desitined for land fill
- need process to make layers robust
- simply CAD cut from waste
- these would be sold with the garment to give people personailsed coat hanger
- need a design/shape that creates no waste- this should be able to be done with CAD- works for buildings

Sharing your driveway as a paid parking space
What a great idea!
I’m all about increased asset utilisation, this is perfect! Driveways are used to varying degrees, night and day and I imagine, tech solutions are now available to manage the scheduling.
